      Parent/Guardians’ Roles & Obligations

We believe a swimmer’s decision to train seasonally or year-round is truly a family decision, and a swimmer’s commitment reflects a family’s commitment. Our most successful swimmers are supported by highly engaged families. While we recognize that each family’s level of involvement and expectations may vary, experience shows that long-term goals—for both individual swimmers and the team—cannot be achieved through the efforts of coaches and athletes alone.

The success of the Central Coast Swim Club (C2SC) depends on strong parent partnership in three key areas: financial support, practice and meet support, and team involvement.

      Financial Support

C2SC members pay a monthly family club fee, which covers pool rental, individual and team equipment, and meet relay fees.

USA Swimming and Oregon Swimming, Inc. provide liability insurance for swimmers during training, competition, and sanctioned team events.

Local and championship swim meets also charge a per-swimmer entry fee.

        Summary of Dues:

  • C2SC Club Monthly Dues: $50 per family
  • USA Swimming Annual Dues: $30–$92 per swimmer, per year
  • Swim Meet Entry Fees (Optional): $25–$45 per meet

Please note that schlorships are available.

Practice and Meet Support

    1. Understand the team’s practice strategies and reinforce them outside of pool time.
    2. Stay actively involved in the competitive (meet) process.
    3. Ensure swimmers compete in sanctioned meets to track personal bests and overall team progress.

We ask that parents not only attend meets and fulfill their volunteer commitments, but also fully engage in the experience to help uphold the high standards for which C2SC is known.

    Practice Schedule & Calendar

A certified coach or lifeguard will be at the pool during each scheduled practice. Reedsport students can walk to the pool immediately after school and gain access to the pool in a supervised environment. This is in coordination with the Highland Elementary School Administration.

    Volunteer Guidelines:

    Away Meets

C2SC will likely be obligated to provide Timers to cover shifts assigned to our team by the meet host. Parents of swimmers participating in away meets are required to share in the timing responsibility, even for those swimmers who drive themselves to the meet.

Each participating team is also required to provide Officials at away meets. The number of Officials we are expected to contribute is correlated to the number of C2SC swimmers entered, and our team could be fined if we fall short. Only USA Swimming certified officials are allowed to perform these roles. If you are interested in certification, we will be glad to assist you in the learning process. Certification steps are found on the Oregon Swimming website under the “OFFICIALS” menu.  https://www.oregonswimming.org/page/home

An email for volunteer sign-ups is usually sent to the team during the week before the meet, we will try to ensure as early notification as possible, but it is likely that people could be asked upon arrival to fulfill a volunteer spot at a meet.

    Team Support

As a part of our big picture philosophy, we want to create the best overall swim team experience for our swimmers. We realize that much of the experience will come from daily training, swimmer development, friends, and the coach/swimmer relationship, but positive social activities certainly enhance the cohesion and enthusiasm of the team. Examples of events include team building activities, Splash visits, theme weeks, rafting trip, team breakfasts, holiday get-togethers, parent socials, and a year-end banquet. We cannot hold these events without a full complement of volunteers, so please assume that you will need to fill at least one job during the year. The jobs are varied and (mostly considered) fun, and they offer a great way to meet other parents on the team. We will be keeping track of the families as they fulfill this obligation, so as soon as you see a job that appeals and works with your schedule, sign-up!

    Merchandise/Gear

C2SC swimmers are expected to arrive on time at workouts with the basic gear necessary to optimize their time in the water. Kickboards, Jr. Pull buoys and Fins are provided by Highland Pool. For meets, we want the participants to appear as a cohesive team, and we will be aspiring toward all swimmers wearing the team logo apparel specified by the Design Committee. This will be an important component of the C2SC culture. C2SC logo swim caps are to be worn at all swimming meets and practices.

USA Swimming and Oregon Swimming Yearly Group Structure Overview

In Winter 2024 - 2025, there are four swimming sub-groups within the C2SC swim team:

    1. Speedsters

The Speedsters represent the 5-8 year old students who are just starting in the sport. We start from scratch, teaching Proper Breathing, Streamlining, Strokes, Starts and Turns.

    2. Mavericks

The Mavericks are between the ages of 6-12. The Mavericks are intermediate swimmers that know many of the competitive skills.

    3. Aqua Jets
The Aqua Jets are rising stars who desire guidance and coaching. Aqua Jets tend to compete in all four strokes.

    4. Mizu 水 ("Water" in Japanese)

水 consists of students who have experience in the sport of competitive swimming and can independently perform a full written workout. The Mizu group likes to have fun and are very serious about the sport.

The criteria used in placing swimmers in their respective groups is as follows:

  • Attitude
  • Performance level/development history/potential
  • Attendance/workout commitment
  • Ability to train at full capacity, training discipline and focus
  • Technique
  • Personal and athletic maturity
  • Meet commitment

Team support C2SC Policy on Behavior The policy and philosophy of C2SC will be viewed in three areas:
      1. The mission and guiding principles of C2SC
      2. Strict protection of the C2SC aquatic environment
      3. Inappropriate behavior outside of C2SC, including bullying and the use of drugs or alcohol.

The Philosophical Backdrop and Mission of C2SC First, and foremost, it is imperative that all members of C2SC, students and parents, fully understand and embrace the team’s mission and values. The culture and athletic foundation of C2SC is based on a high-character athletic process coupled with an integrity-driven lifestyle. Our core values will be centered on integrity, work ethic, humility, compassion, mutual respect, and team support. This “character- based” philosophy encompasses all aspects of behavior, attitude, and interaction. There is no divorcing the swimmer or athlete from the person or teammate. Beyond creating a positive character-based environment, it is the objective of C2SC to be a safe-haven for young athletes who choose to walk a socially responsible path. We want to lead the way in this regard and show that it is possible to maintain a positive, healthy, environment for young adults. While certain activity may be commonplace in society or acceptable locally, we will not tolerate any activity that compromises the integrity of our team or the organization. The “Protection” of C2SC Aquatic Environment Our philosophy should translate into a positive, healthy, and productive environment that supports all members and protects the environment and culture. Behavioral expectations will encompass every aspect of this program from training, competition and travel to activities and general personal interaction. Members will be expected to act with the utmost integrity always. As stated above, any action or activity that compromises the integrity of C2SC will not be tolerated. Examples would be inappropriate language, improper attire, lack of team support, negativity/apathy, tardiness, being disrespectful to anyone, or clearly engaging in an activity that is inappropriate or illegal. Even the smallest infractions will be addressed, and the coaches will be the ones who evaluate and address behavioral issues. Behavior “outside” of C2SC While we do not have the desire or intention to monitor or evaluate behavior outside of C2SC, we will be steadfast in our effort to protect this team and its culture. Any action or activity that would be unbecoming of a high-character athlete or representative of the ideals of this program will be addressed, regardless of the circumstance or location. Anything that translates into dialogue, focus, or rumor within the team or the community will become a team issue, and therefore will be addressed. Regarding the use of drugs or alcohol outside of C2SC, those who engage in such activities, do so in direct contradiction to everything this team stands for. These actions betray the trust and commitment of the coaches and swimmers, and they jeopardize the organizational foundation and reputation. C2SC will not need “proof” of such activity to investigate and act against. Response to inappropriate actions, or the suspicion of such actions, either within the context of an C2SC activity or outside, will be addressed by the staff with the team member involved. If necessary, a meeting will be held with the member’s parents. If the ideals and philosophies of C2SC are not aligned with those of the athlete, we will ask the member/family to leave the team. Finally, the coaching staff of C2SC reserves the right to dismiss any member for actions or attitudes that are counter to the team’s mission and ideals. SafeSport All adult members of USA Swimming over the age of 18 are required to take USA Swimming’s online Athlete Protection Training (APT) course and pass the test. Before each meet, Oregon Swimming Officials provide the meet host with a list of entered swimmers who have not passed the APT test and will not permit them to compete until they are cleared. There is no grace period – this requirement goes into effect starting on the swimmer’s 18th birthday. The course and additional information can be found on the USASwimming.org website. The APT course is free of charge and, upon successful completion, should update in your USA Swimming membership record within 24 hours. This training must be renewed annually. Coaches, Officials, chaperones, Meet Directors, and adult athletes are included in this requirement.

      Communications & Contacts

1.Communications The primary form of communication for C2SC is text & email. Please make sure that we have the proper email address for parents and swimmers. The coaching staff will send out updates and other important information. Also, we recommend that parents and swimmers check the Facebook page (facebook.com/c2swim) for news and updates regularly. You can also email the coach or text for questions.
